It seems like old news to me by now, but I haven’t said anything about it here. This blog is for posterity as much as anything else, so I suppose this is worth mentioning.
On Thursday, March 27 2005 I was involved in a automobile accident. There were no injuries thank God, and the damage was relatively minor. But even this low level of car wreck is a massive inconvenience. It’s been almost a month and things are moving at glacier speed. The insurance company is in no hurry to get things right.
The body work is very slow going with the insurance company not being much help. I need to try to contact the claims adjuster and they even make that a chore, having to go through their website communication portal I’ll call it. They don’t call. They don’t text. They don’t send emails, at least not directly. The only emails I have received from the insurance people have been telling me to check their website for the actual information. But at least they started doing that. The first couple days I would just get the adjusters voicemail when I tried to call, and had no idea they were sending things on their portal. So annoying.
I don’t know how this sort of thing goes for most people. I suspect it isn’t much better. I expect most insurance companies make things as uncomfortable as possible while still fulfilling their legal requirements. The one time I was actually able to reach my claims adjuster the phone line was so bad I couldn’t understand half what she was saying.
The accident was 100% the other parties fault. This was acknowledged by his insurance company. They claim to make everything right. Great. I just have to do everything on their schedule and the way they say. They won’t even cover the rental car cost upfront. I have to rent the car on my dime then submit form to be reimbursed. I’m wondering what fresh hell the insurance company will unleash when trying to get back the $800 plus dollars expended. I shudder to think.
The rental car is a Mitsubishi Mirage G4. It was pretty much brand new when I got it. It had 400 miles on it give or take. It’s a small car, but the interior is pretty comfortable for my large posterior. It doesn’t have an arm rest to the right of the driver though, and that’s a little inconvenient. It does get good gas mileage. 40mpg if I’m reading everything right. I haven’t done the math yet though. There aren’t a lot of bells and whistles. But the price is pretty low compared to a lot of other options. It seems like a good value from my limited experience with it.
