Different looks of the same pic

The featured image at the top of this post is the original straight out of the camera view. I tend to shoot images with flat processing. I like to add different looks in post production as I see fit. I guess this is part of my personal process at this point. It’s not set in stone and I am always trying different things both intentionally and unintentionally. There are so many variables to consider when practicing the art of photography.

This image is from a recent shoot at the Anna Ruby Falls in Georgia. It is part of the Unicoi state park, and it was pretty magnificent. This is near Helen Georgia which is really a tourist destination in the north Georgia mountains. The north Georgia mountains are part of the Blue Ridge mountains which are a part of the Appalachian mountain range. It would seem that north Georgia is on one end of the Blue Ridge mountain range, which is apparently a range of the tallest mountain peaks on the east coast of North America. The Appalachian range encompass the Blue Ridge range. It covers a larger area but overall it’s mountains are a little more than hills outside the Blue Ridge range.

My ADD started mt down a path of geography and my mind started wandering to history and culture. Alas this is not why I started this post, and a big part of why I have a difficult time staying focused. Back to photography.

I’m happy to say I got a whole lot of good photos to play with on this trip. Many of which I would deem to be really good and many of which are pretty good and not too many of the exposures I made were complete junk. Complete junk maybe a little harsh. Perhaps not necessarily keepers would sound a little less self deprecating. I can’t speak for anyone else, but when I do photography in a way that I’m trying to achieve something that transcends simple snap shots I generally take several different exposures of the same subject using different techniques and angles and even timings. Two exposures can’t physically be taken at the same time from the same camera, so each shot is from a different time as slight as that variation may be. But even in the tiniest variations of time things can change pretty significantly. The arc of a ball in flight. The sparkle in an eye and twist of a smile. Pose positions. Much like a person can never step into the same river twice, as the saying goes.

All of these images have been manipulated from one parent image. As previously stated the original unaltered image is at the top of the post. I could make endless variations from very subtle differences to insanely outrageous variations with just some simple manipulations of the underlying properties of this image. I have created four that I like and want to share. There are aspects of each of these variations I appreciate. I’m not saying that any one of them would be the end product so to speak. After all it’s subjective which is best anyway. I really just want to get something on here today, right now. I’ve been remiss in my blogging lately.

There are a whole lot of images from this shoot I like, many which I expect I’ll will post in the future. But today my attention is already wandering. I’m happy I could keep it together long enough to do this much.

    Macon Pics

I’ve wanted to get this shot for a while. I had some time and motivation the other day so I went for it. It wasn’t the most photogenic day, but I’m pretty happy with how this turned out. I do think I’ll go back some other time when it’s less cloudy and foggy. There wasn’t much direct light. This was pretty early in the morning.

I would be interested to see how the light would be at the end of the day. There are all sorts of lighting conditions I think would be interesting to play with here. It’s a bit of a drive to get here, but I think it would be worth it to get some different looks. I’ll keep this in the back in my mind when I want to do some shooting.

  • Drone Diddley

    Drone Diddley

Not much to say about these. Just some drone pics I got recently. Warner Robins, GA.

  • Some cool drone footage of some cool rural scenes

Some cool drone footage of some cool rural scenes

And a few still pics also.

I’ve got to say I really like this set. The sweeping vistas of farm scenes is fascinating to me. I like the symmetry of it all. I like seeing the how mankind shapes the environment for better or for worse. The drone is a great way to see things from a perspective most people will never actually see. I’d be honestly surprised if the farmers who own and work these fields have ever had to opportunity to see them in this way. I don’t imagine they will see it now as I post to this obscure blog. Oh well. I do enjoy it all.

  • Just play’n around

    Just play’n around

I was playing around with this landscape shot from the group I just posted. I’m probably too crispy, but I really like this one, at least at the moment. I could go on endlessly adjusting layers and making little tweaks, but I’m quite happy stopping here.

I like the muted colors. It’s not too in your face. And purples and blues are very relaxing to me. Yet this has a kind of dark and ominous feel to it. It gives me a Mirkwood vibe, or one of the other haunted forests the hobbits and co found themselves creeping around in lost and afraid.

  • A couple landscapes

    A couple landscapes

I went out and found a spot to do some photography, landscape photography in this case. As you may have noticed my specialty is not having a specialty, at least at this time. I love all types of photography and digital tinkering and am frequently bouncing my attention around and trying things. Frequently I tend to focus on the natural world around me, it’s pretty convenient as it is around me. I don’t have the budget or time for elaborate photo safaris most of the time, so I make the best with what I do have.

I suppose it is something of a maturation that I have come to realize that beautiful and interesting things are really in the eye of the beholder, and the beholder can frame anything how they like it. I’ve been a little disheartened at the lack of dynamic landscapes in my local area. I’ve longed for majestic mountains and always fascinating seascapes or even better amazing city views. But I have trees and swamps and such, and they can be quite interesting when looked at with the right frame of mind. Plus It occurred to me these things that are common to me are exotic to others living in different circumstances. And that is one of the appeals of landscapes in my opinion, to see the beauty of the greater world through the eyes of other people.

Anyway I found a spot not far from my home and set up for a couple shots. I’ve been wanting to do some experimenting with focus stacking, and that is what I did here. I tried several different techniques and learned. It’s important for me to always learn something, even when doing something I’ve done a hundred times. That is one of the wonderful and challenging things about photography; the variables are never exactly the same twice. It’s a little like that person who never steps in the same river twice.

Anyway all of the attached landscapes are the result of different focus stacking techniques. And a couple birds decided to come around as I was packing up, so I swapped lenses and got a couple nice shots. Apart from focus stacking all of these have not been further edited. These are strait out of the camera with auto level applied. To me auto levels isn’t editing, but opinions may vary. I may do some future edits and post them, at least that’s the plan. But my attention is so easily derailed who knows. But I see some pretty good potential images that I can do some interesting things with.

  • Look out there

    Look out there

I’ve got a couple little buddies that visit my little yard. One of them is this guy. This little chipmunk or one of his family I presume have been visiting for the last couple years. I don’t see it often but am glad when I do. I’m a little bit surprised, but heartened, that the occasional cat buddy coming have missed it so far.

I was glad and lucky I got what I did with the little ‘munk. They are quite fast. I didn’t have the presence of mind to ramp up the shutter speed as much as I should have. That’s something I need to work on when focusing on animals. I was also lucky that it didn’t seem that terrified of me and while keeping its distance it didn’t altogether vanish right away as they are prone to do. I’ve missed a few opportunities to get shots of these critters because they don’t usually hang around long enough for me to get my rig and then go outside. Usually as soon as I open the door they are gone like the wind.

I know it’s not all exotic, but I’ve always liked chipmunks. I suppose the childish Alvin and the chipmunks characters that were popular when I was a little kid play some role in that. They are also more rare than it’s cousin the squirrel which a majority of people around here consider a nuisance, rats with tails. I kinda like all these little critters really even rats to some degree. I wouldn’t want to share living space with any rats, but I really am fascinated by them, possibly because my Chinese zodiac is the year of the rat.

I did some landscape shooting yesterday. I’m excited to start looking at and playing with it, and will do so as soon as I post this nugget. I did some experimenting with focus stacking that I think will turn out to be pretty cool. My old computer is going to be grinding its processor very soon on these bad boys. I look forward to getting them posted in the next day or two. I’m going to try to do something creative every day during this break. Even if it’s small I’ll either shoot or process/edit something, and maybe write a little. I hope to produce some good and interesting things.

  • I’ve been kinda busy elsewhere, but gotta post something

I’ve been kinda busy elsewhere, but gotta post something

It’s been the last couple weeks of school and the bus has been a little extra. The children are all wound up at the notion of freedom. It’s good they are. Most of them will never have so much time off again if they become “productive” citizens. I don’t think that is something I ever considered until it was almost time to graduate high school. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about it since then, probably to my detriment.

While on my semi-daily layover in the mornings I’ve started taking a little walk to exercise my body and mind. I’m a little sad I never thought about doing this sooner. It’s a nice way to spend a ew minutes I would otherwise just be sitting and waiting, wasting time on my phone.

I have been trying to do a little writing during my layovers, if I can think of something to write about. Coming up with ideas to write about when you don’t have a specific direction is challenging. I really want to keep this a politics free zone as much as possible, and that is a big part of my daily existence as much as I try to limit it. Keeping up with the news is something of an addiction in my family.

So I wanted to post something anything. It is my intention and hope to produce as much content as I can, even if it’s just diary stuff. Posting some kind of words along with some kind of pix. I look at it a bit like being a shark. I have to keep moving to stay alive. I wish I had lived up to that ideal in my past life. I spent a lot of time I would consider having not lived, but that’s something I’ll not dwell on further.

The photo pix in this blog post are all from my phone. They were all taken when doing my little layover walks I mentioned previously, trying to keep some continuity here. This is over a couple days and has some of my friends/coworkers too. I hope the live style loop pic of Larry holds up upon transfer to the WWW. It’s pretty funny.

I’m really impressed with the quality of pix phones produce at this point in time. These are from an iPhone 16e. How far technology has come in my lifetime. It boggles my mind. I can only imagine how my parents generation feel about it all. I reckon that could be a whole topic of discussion if I can maintain the resolve to explore it later. I wouldn’t bet on in though. My ADD probably wont allow it.

  • Why do I share this work on here?

Why do I share this work on here?

I saw a similar question on a post from DPReview. It asked, why do photographers post on social media? I thought that was a good question. At this time this blog is the only place I’ve been posting anything at least recently. I’d hardly call it social media maybe anti-social media. There isn’t some throng of people out there particularly interested in my random thoughts and random photos. I’m not even all that sure of what I’m doing. I’m just doing it, doing something in the hopes that some kind of clarity of vision occurs to me at some point along the way.

It’s been my intention for a good while to create a small business doing portraits and such. It’s not necessarily because portraits are my favorite niche in photography. I do like doing portraits, but my personality makes it difficult to find subjects that want that kind of thing. Also general laziness and procrastination are a constant force I reckon with. Time constraints also play a role. I do have a full time job and it’s hard to get things done even if my hours are typically well under the generally accepted standard forty hour work week.

I tend to excuse my procrastination to myself, as I am accountable only to myself and the people I owe money I like the independence from having to cater to the arbitrary whims of random strangers in order to keep my bills paid. . My job as a school bus driver keeps me pretty busy a lot of the time. I’m not usually in a struggle to make end meet every month, but things can be tight and a little something extra would be very welcome.

I am doing work I enjoy, bus driving, writing and posting here, working on and learning about my website development, and taking photos of things that spark my interest. Only one of those things is currently bringing in funds while the rest tend to deplete them.

So back to the question of why I share work on here. On here being carterpix.com. The short answer is I enjoy it. I love photography. The act of photographing. Processing the results. Editing photographs in creative ways. Occasionally editing photographs artistically. These are the things that have made me happy since forever. Or as long as I can remember anyway.

I’ve been discovering that I enjoy writing. I’m not great at it. I don’t have a story I feel compelled to tell, at least I don’t yet. I’ve never really tried writing fiction. I don’t think I have the attention span required. I did intentionally bad in school once I started puberty and unfortunately didn’t learn all I should have. The tragedy of my youth is a whole other topic, even a book, but no one would want to read it, especially me. I have been working to improve my writing and the best way to do that is to write. Just like photography or anything else really. Doing is the best way to learn, and not just doing once but doing so in earnest.

I’m cutting this posting here with a cute little picture I made with Adobe Firefly AI. They are giving their clients a free taste to get them on the hook for more monthly subscriptions. I do have to admit that this is a pretty cool picture for just a two sentence description. AI is both exciting and scary to a humble human. How long before the AI don’t need us anymore? That’s a whole other discussion.

  • Buzzards are a good omen right?

Buzzards are a good omen right?

I was looking for a tie in with that title because my topic and my pics are going to be completely unrelated. I took these photos a good while back at least over a month ago. Ive been sitting on them because Ive been busy with other things and I didn’t want two bird posts in a row. Im not sure why I felt that way but here we are.

I really like these photos of the buzzards which is a colloquialism for vultures. I believe these are vultures based on my expert usage of Google. Besides they are a pretty unique looking bird and something kids learn about due to the unique look they have compared to other birds. Specifically the bald head. The reason it’s bald is pretty interesting, but I’ll leave that to you to research.

These were taken literally in my back yard. On occasion a large pack/flock/murder of buzzards hang around the area looking for food and it’s a pretty nice place, lots of trees, lots of water, probably lots of dead things to feast upon nearby. Yes buzzards are scavengers. You probably already knew that but it doesn’t hurt to mention. When I saw the star of the show posing for me I knew I couldn’t be lazy and went for my camera. I’m so glad I did. While not the most beautiful of birds in a conventional sense these pics turned out beautifully in my opinion. And that pose is just so gnarly. I assume that one was warming up as it was the cool season. In any case it kept that wings out pose for a good long while and gave me ample opportunity to get some pretty awesome shots. Thanks buzzard buddy. I think you are beautiful.

So what does any of that have to do with omens? Well buzzards, being scavengers of carrion, typically imply that something close by is dead or dying, not the most happy of omens. Even though I like to think I’m a rational person that bases their most important decisions on cold logic and scientific principles I also believe in the supernatural to some extant. I don’t think one should dismiss thousands of years of human instinct and tradition entirely out of hand. Besides you couldn’t really disprove something like a black cat crossing your path and the trajectory of your day. Or maybe you could but I still believe there are things science can’t account for entirely and will probably always be as long as there are humans to observe things.

Anyway these buzzards appeared at a time in my life when a lot of things are going wrong. With my personal outlook it’s probably safe to say I think a lot of things are going wrong most of the time, and maybe that’s the case but isn’t objectively measurable. As it is a matter that is entirely my own it is my subjective opinion and therefore must be true to me. But I do try to stand back and think about it comparing my state of being with that of a poor orphan child in some third world country who’s survival depends on what they find in the trash dump. So while things seem to be falling apart left and right they are so much better than they could be for a human or other living thing in this life.

As I write this stream of consciousness blog/journal entry it occurs to me my attention deficit disorder supposedly mild has really kicked into high gear. What I’m writing now is different than what I intended to write while I was thinking ahead a couple sentences ago. And this is something I’ve struggled with my whole life I suppose. But only recently was I given that diagnosis from a therapeutic counselor. She wasn’t a doctor but a master of Psychology. I think her assessment is good as I can’t keep a constant line of thought to save my life when left to my own devices. Good or not there has been no treatment, and probably never will be. But that’s okay I guess my life isn’t in imminent danger due to this condition, at least not tangibly. But it does kinda help explain why I never really found something to excel at in a professional sense. At least I have made it this far despite my own self inflicted wounds in part stemming on my inability to remain focused on anything for very long.

Photography is the only thing in my life I have been able to keep a focus on and interest in for so long. And even then there were long periods I didn’t focus on it due to the may other important things that were my world. Things like jobs, education and relationships. The things that keep a person alive in this world. Photography is great but in my experience has been more of a net resource loss and not something that I was capable of maintaining all the time. But with that said my interest in photography did evolve into what I did professionally for a long while, and was in many ways significantly complementary. Specifically the business of video, which was at the time potentially more lucrative. Video production was already a large industry and was growing and evolving quickly. I was lucky to work myself into a position where I was able to make it my job. But due to a lot of bad decisions and luck I never was able to move above the line and get to the lucrative part of the business. But I did learn a whole lot about a whole lot of things, many of which directly tie into photography. Really the industry of film and video production was built on the back of photography. A fact that seems self evident to me but is probably never consciously considered by most people. And really why would they?
